UBICOMP / ISWC 2020
VIRTUAL CONFERENCE

UbiComp / ISWC 2020 is a virtual conference. While we are not able to meet in beautiful Cancun (Mexico), attendees of this year’s conference are still able to experience an amazing program and incredible opportunities for interaction, engagement and discussion. UbiComp / ISWC 2020 uses the Whova web and mobile app to enable attendees to navigate across the different activities, as well as to communicate among each other, and gather.town to enable interactive possibilities throughout the conference.

Pre-Conference Program

September 12-13, 2020

Workshops: On Saturday and Sunday September 12-13, 2020, UbiComp / ISWC 2020 features 6 workshops. Workshops are held on Zoom, and workshop organizers set up their specific activities, including presentations of the accepted workshop papers and other engaging activities.

Doctoral Colloquium: On Saturday September 12, 2020, UbiComp / ISWC 2020 features a virtual Doctoral Colloquium (DC) on Zoom. The DC is a unique opportunity for PhD students to present their key concepts and ideas to a premier scientific panel and receive top-quality feedback from excellent external reviewers.

Main Conference Program

September 14-17, 2020

Moving to a fully virtual format presents interesting challenges and opportunities for the technical program of UbiComp / ISWC. We have chosen a mixture of plenary/keynotes and parallel sessions for the conference, and they will all occur during two 2-3-hour blocks each day Sept 14-17, 2020.

IMWUT / ISWC Papers

UbiComp / ISWC 2020 features 121 IMWUT papers and 21 ISWC Notes and Briefs that are presented across 15 sessions in 3 parallel tracks on Zoom.

Those blocks were chosen so as to allow everyone across the many different time zones an opportunity to participate during “waking” hours.

The parallel sessions are 90 minutes in length, with a series of 10 short back-to-back pre-recorded talks followed by a 30-minute live moderated all-session discussion. Questions to a specific author/paper are handled through the various chat features in Whova. The session chair will encourage discussions amongst all presenters (and other authors) and the audience on the overarching themes that emerged during the session.

Keynotes

Several Keynote Speakers are engaging attendees throughout the conference. The opening keynote sets the tone for UbiComp / ISWC 2020 and the closing keynote panel helps the community reflect how technology can help in this time of crisis.

Additional Conference Activities

September 14-17, 2020

Demos/Posters: 46 posters and 3 demos have been accepted and are presented at UbiComp / ISWC 2020 in a virtual, but engaging format during the first day of the conference in our own gather.town interactive space.

ISWC Design Discussion: The ISWC Design Discussion’s special panel features 6 engaging wearable computing innovations.

Gadget Show: UbiComp / ISWC 2020 continues the tradition of the gadget show, but this year we ask attendees to present their virtual gadgets in a fast paced madness presentation on Zoom.

Awards: Several awards are presented at UbiComp / ISWC 2020. The Awards session includes the introduction of the awardees, as well as a series of short speeches, and talks.

Town Hall Meeting: As a UbiComp / ISWC tradition, the last day of the conference we engage the audience in a Town Hall meeting, that gives everyone a chance to share their suggestion on how to move forward our community and start planning UbiComp / ISWC 2021 in Cancun (Mexico).

Social and Networking Activities

Being a virtual/online conference presents challenges and opportunities also in terms of engaging the community and all attendees of UbiComp / ISWC 2020. Two main tools foster social interaction and networking activities.

Whova

UbiComp / ISWC 2020 uses Whova as the conference web and mobile app. Whova allows all attendees to use a common space where they can retrieve information about the different conference activities, links to the live sessions on Zoom, access to the recorded talks, list of all speakers, etc.

Whova also allows attendees to easily communicate, and create personalized spaces like ad-hoc video chat rooms, ad-hoc or scheduled meet-ups, and more. Through Whova attendees can engage with fun activities throughout the conference, as well as effectively communicate with all other attendees and the conference organizers.

The Whova space also allows attendees to network, discover other attendees and colleagues, set up their own profile (including bio information, links, etc.) and lookup other attendees’ profiles.

The UbiComp/ISWC 2020 dedicated Whova app is already open starting mid-August to allow speakers and attendees to start engaging and network even before the conference starts.

Gather.Town

To provide an interactive space for attendees we use gather.town. A dedicated UbiComp / ISWC 2020 gather.town space is available starting on Monday September 14th, and allows attendees to roam around our virtual space, meet and video-chat with other attendees in ad-hoc manners, as well as in dedicated spaces that we will provide on gather.town.

The Poster / Demos session is hosted in gather.town during the first day of the conference, and other tracks like workshops and the DC are able to present results of their pre-conference activities in gather.town as well.

At UbiComp / ISWC 2020 we use gather.town as an interactive space where many of the activities that typically happen at an in-person conference can still be hosted. A number of activities, including a scavenger hunt, ask me anything sessions, senior/junior lunches, etc. are hosted in our gather.town interactive space.
